Tibet Destinations Altitude

The lowest region in Tibet is Nyingchi, while the highest area is Ngari in west Tibet, with an average elevation of 4,500 meters. We suggest travelers over 60 do not go to Ngari, as the altitude is high and facilities are very primitive.

Travelers to Tibet should spend at least 3 days at a place with relatively low altitude, such as Lhasa, for acclimatization before traveling to a higher altitude. See below for altitudes of major Tibet cities/towns and attractions.
