Samding Monastery Travel Experience

Samding Monastery – A Hidden Interesting Tour Site Near Lake Yamdrok

Samding Temple is located on a steep mountain peak southwest of Yangzhuo Yongcuo Lake (Lake Yamdrok). It belongs to the Tibetan Buddhism Kagyu tribe of the Shangba Kagyu tribe. It is an ancient temple with a history of more than 300 years.

Sanding Temple Short Introduction

Sanding Temple has a long history. The monastery was probably built in the 13th century and is related to the Bodong sect initiated by Bodong Chokle Namgyel. The sect has never received much attention, although many temples within its radius have followed its commandments.

Once, Sangding seemed to have lived with monks and nuns, and was managed by a convent, one of the only female incarnations in Tibet. The lineage goes back to the 18th century. Legend has it that in 1717, the convent turned herself and her associates into pigs in order to protect them from Dunggar. For centuries, the unity of blood continued until 1937. That year, the acting regent of Tibet announced that the sixth Dorje Famo was recognized by a young girl. In his opinion, in this case, the transfer of souls actually took place before death.

It appears that the sixth Dorje Phagmo did not live in Samding. She went to India in 1959, but decided to return to Tibet the same year. However, she made it clear that Herschel no longer wanted to be a living Buddha. She is married with three children and holds a senior government position in Lhasa.
