Mindrolling Monastery (Minzhulin Temple) is one of the three major temples of the Nyingma School (Red Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism. It was built during the Qing Emperor Kangxi Period and was founded by Ningma School’s Fuzang master Dedalingba Jimedoje. Minzhulin Temple not only has a very important position in studying the history and teachings of the Ningma School, but is also a comprehensive institution that uniquely studies Tibetan traditional culture in Tibetan areas beyond the scope of religious culture. The monks in the temple have high attainments in Sanskrit, ancient Tibetan, Tibetan medicine, Tibetan medicine, and astronomical calendars, especially the research and production of Tibetan calligraphy and Tibetan incense recipes. The Tibetan incense materials produced by the monks of Minzhulin Temple are exquisite. It is full of fragrance, long-lasting fragrance, and has multiple medicinal effects. It is regarded as a superior product and enjoys a good reputation in all parts of Tibet. In the past, it was only provided by monks and nobles. At the same time, the calculation of the “Tibetan Calendar” in the Tibetan area over the years is also responsible for the Minzhulin Temple, so the temple has the reputation of “the first lama school in Tibet.”

Mindrolling Monastery (Minzhulin) covers an area of about 100,000 square meters. The main hall of Zurakan is painted with many heads, arms, and dazzling faces. This is a major feature of Ningmapa Temple. On the third floor of the main hall, there are two Buddhist halls, one of which is the Lama Lakang Buddha Hall. Minzhulin Temple focuses on studying astronomical calendar, medicine, and is known for its beautiful calligraphy. In accordance with past practice, senior monks are selected by Minzhulin Temple, some of whom are teachers of the Sangha Academy located in the Potala Palace, while others go to Menzikang to study calendars and compile and revise the Tibetan Chronology. The monks of Minzhulin Temple can marry wives and have children, inherited by the father and son or Weng Yue on the inheritance of the temple master, and are not limited to the relationship between father and son. Minzhulin Temple has a very important position in studying the history and teachings of the Ningma School.

Tibet Mindrolling Monastery Travel Guide & Advice

  • It is the monastery outside of Lhasa, need Alien’s Travel Permit (ATP);
  • A licensed tour guide is a must, otherwise you may not be able to enter;
  • Private or shared tour vehicle can take you there (mostly you need to book PRIVATE tour);
  • Don’t wear revealing clothes, hats or caps, sunglasses, or masks when visiting the site;
  • Follow your Tibetan guide’s instruction and the photograph policy inside.
  • Please take passports, permits (but no water, lighters, sprays, cigarettes, scissors, knives, etc, security checking is similar as at airport, or the statute of liberty, empire tower, cruises ships, etc).
